No-Shave November originally began to raise funds and awareness for men's health concerns, specifically testicular and prostate cancer. However, in May of 2016, Mike Elliott passed away at 56 after a 4 year battle with colorectal cancer bringing about a new cause to raise awareness for; colorectal cancer. A few of Mike's family and friends decided to participate in No-Shave November last year (2016) to raise money and awareness for a research foundation that contributed to Mike's treatment process. Last year was such an amazing success as we raised $780 for Mezin-Koats Colon Cancer Research! This year will be the 2nd Annual No-Shave November for Colorectal Research and we hope to build on and surpass what we did last year by setting a goal of $1000 this year totalling our raised to date amount to $1,780!

To say that Mike Elliott was a great man is the understatement of a lifetime. As a husband of 34 years and father of 3 girls, his life revolved around his family, it was apparent every day of his life. From weekends at the cabin to dinners out with his ladies, everything he did was to ensure he and his family had the best life possible.  Mike was a positive, caring, helpful, hilarious, stubborn, strong, fun, and “tough as nails” courageous person; he was a role model to many people he met over the years.

In addition to spending time with his family, Mike also had a lifelong interest in hunting, fishing, and all things NASCAR.  Mike also had a passion for helping others, whether he was volunteering for various causes within the community or rallying others to help people he knew that were in need; he always put others above himself.

Mike was diagnosed with cancer of the appendix in August of 2012. He fought as hard as anyone could, with unbeatable strength, positivity, and that stubbornness that only he could have. Through over 100 chemo treatments and 60+ procedures, he rarely was seen without a smile on his face or a joke up his sleeve. He would not let the disease take away who he was.

The motivation for this month is to keep Mike's legacy alive and continue to support the Research Foundation that was so influential in his treatment process. Stuart Scott once said that, “When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live.” This is a legacy truly lived out by Mike as he was a passionate man full of life and love. He was the kind of man that brought the room to life, gave hope to others, he wasn't going to let cancer run his life, but rather, he talked about "living with cancer." No matter what, he found avenues to prove that you could and Mezin-Koats Research helped him with that. Our hope for this month is to spread Mike's legacy, giving hope to those fighting cancer, and funding research that will also defeat cancer by finding a more effective treatment or even a cure. We hope that you would consider donating $1/day that we don't shave (all of November) or a one-time gift to give to this research fund. Additionally, we hope that you can spread the word about Mike's story and the Mezin-Koats Fund for Colorectal Research. Thank you for helping us. Hope it is a hairy November for others too who plan to join the No-Shaving Movement to spread Mike's hope and this research fund!
