**Update: Thanks to the generosity for our friends and family, we've already raised $75,000 total through online and offline gifts.  Our goal of $25,000 will help endow this fund to make a significant impact.  Thank you!**

On July 30, 2014, our younger daughter, Zoya, was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma.  She was only five years-old. Zoya fought a courageous battle that included numerous chemotherapy sessions, a resection and reconstructive surgery of her right hip and a bone marrow transplant. The cancer won the battle but during her short time with us, our daughter taught us about patience, determination and optimism. She once told us that she wanted to be a cancer doctor but then followed up by saying, "Actually, I want to become a nurse. I know how much it hurts when they put a needle in my port. I will make sure that no child will hurt anymore".

We want to share the spirit of Zoya for the betterment of our society, albeit a tiny drop in the bucket.

It is with this intention that our family has created the Zoya Palliative Care Memorial Fund to further the U of M education and research of future healthcare providers who wish to take care of the dying and their families.

Please support us in realizing Zoya's dream.

Sincerely,
Zoya's Family (Wajahat, Mariam and Maria)

What is Palliative Care?

An approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness, through prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment, treatment of pain and related physical, psychosocial and spiritual problems.

What are the needs and challenges of Palliative Care?

It is relatively a new field and requires active recruitment and research for the ongoing needs of the society. Considering the dynamics of a young family and the enormous impact of this catastrophe on the lives of many, including children a more comprehensive care tailored towards each family is warranted. The most cost effective way to approach this challenge is to help train future physicians, nurses, social care workers to become leaders in their field by virtue of highly specialized education and experience.

The Zoya Palliative Care Memorial Fund will provide funding to physicians in training, nurses and chaplains at the University Of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital to be trained in taking care of children who will depart from their families and this world.
