Help Us Celebrate the Seventieth Anniversary of Our Founding!

Click here to listen to the student-staff describe the importance of THE TOWER on our campus and in our community!

The Tower is an awarding-winning magazine produced by students enrolled in an English class, Literary Magazine Production Lab I & II. We first launched in 1952 as Ivory Tower, a tabloid insert for The Minnesota Daily, and then rebooted in 2006 as a magazine attached to a class offered by the English Department. In 2018 we shortened our name to The Tower, as an acknowledgment of our mission to be inclusive, and with a nod to the nickname used by the editors of our previous incarnations.

Today, the journal features the art, poetry, fiction, and nonfiction of undergraduate students at the University of Minnesota. The Tower is a free annual that is circulated on campus and in the community. Our theme for this year is Periphery, a term that describes the marginal outer edges of vision and awareness. This theme aims to bring into focus stories, ideas, and images that are often beyond our everyday perception. The Tower amplifies the voices that bring our campus to life, highlighting our shared learning and diverse expressions.

Students of The Tower learn how to assemble and publish a magazine over the course of two semesters. By crafting The Tower, we prepare ourselves to take on future challenges in our educational and professional careers. We receive real, hands-on experience in producing a journal that we are proud to share with the community.

Our work was recognized with a Gold Crown Award in 2021 by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

Our goal is to raise $4,000 to support the costs of printing and promoting the magazine. Your contributions allow us to make The Tower free for the university community. To show our appreciation for your donation, we will send you a copy of The Tower and list your name as a donor in this issue. The 2022 edition will publish on April 28, and be celebrated via a combination of live and recorded events.

Your tax-deductible donation helps students experience the joy of seeing their work in print. No financial contribution is too small, and every contribution is meaningful.

Please help celebrate our seventieth anniversary by contributing to The Tower 2022!
