The University of Minnesota Law School sets itself apart, not just in academic achievement, but also in musical talent. Every year, the Theatre of the Relatively Talentless (TORT) stages a musical that is written, produced, directed, and performed solely by law school students. What began in 2002 has now grown into a highly anticipated, annual spectacle, providing law students (along with faculty, judges, and other legal scholars) with a much-needed creative outlet. This year's show, Super Smash Gophers, follows the journey of an optimistic law student and his best friend as they try to get him to his OCI interview at a prestigious law firm. One jealous peer, at the behest of her overbearing boss and with the help of the League of Evil Interns, sets up a series of games to stop our hero from making his interview and guaranteeing the position for herself. Will our hero make it through every level of the subplaza? Will he get any cool powerups along the way and beat the game? You’ll have to join us on April 16 and 17 to find out (details on an in-person, outdoor event forthcoming) or at a virtual showing (date/time TBD)!
Before this video game-inspired journey can begin, however, we need your help. We <3 TORT is an event loved by all to connect current TORT-feasors to TORT alumni. This year, we're adding a bit of flavor and making it a virtual trivia night! As you reconnect with former classmates, meet future colleagues, and challenge everyone to a battle of wits, we are asking you to consider donating to TORT and helping to make this year’s production, silly, sassy, and (most importantly) solvent. TORT would not be possible without the generosity of TORT alumni in funding our productions.
This year in particular, TORT has made the decision to make our show free for all viewers, both outdoors/in-person and virtual. This decision was made due to complications arising out of pre-recording our show instead of hosting it live and also out of an awareness that this is a tough time for everyone, and that our job is to help make that better, not impose financial barriers. In order to realize this dream of a free show, and especially as we grapple with the challenges of COVID-19, we need your help more than ever.
