Every dollar donated will support UMPD K-9 units here at the University of Minnesota!
Make A Difference
This is a good way to combine the passion of canines with a desire to support our police department. The appropriate resources needed to protect our cities and neighborhoods can be financially limiting. Annual costs of one K-9 Team is approximately $22, 000. Our goal is to build this fund to allow our brave canines, and their partners to arrive home safely.
You can support us by pledging a donation to our UMPD K9 Fund. It can be as little or as much as you can - every little bit helps!
Examples of costs associated with the canines are:
$50- will provide a month’s supply of food for one K-9
$100- will provide a K-9 collar and harness
$1000- will build a K-9 kennel and run at a station
$1000- will provide one K-9 annual visits to the vet
$1000- will provide a K-9 safety vest
$2000- will purchase a heat alarm for a K-9 vehicle
$4-10,000- will purchase one K-9
Remember, your pledge can be as little or as much as you can provide.
Our UMPD K9 unit currently features three K9’s who work with human partners: the three “explosive” K9’s are skilled in responding to bomb threats, suspicious packages, tracking suspects, recovering evidence, and agility. Two of our working dogs, Doc and Gator, are Labrador Retrievers. Our third working dog, Rio is a German Shepherd. Rio is our only dual purpose K9, trained for patrol and explosives.
Our K9’s can most frequently be seen prior to and during Gopher sporting events. UMPD K-9s also provide dignitary protection for other special events on campus and around the state. Our K9’s are available upon request statewide by law enforcement agencies for assistance in explosive detection and tracking.
Our K9’s make appearances and provide demonstrations at special events. All K9’s live with their handlers and are members of the handlers’ families.
This fund will support the overall needs of the U of M Police K-9 Unit. Funds will be used to support handler and canine training, specialized equipment needs, and additional operational needs as determined by the handling team and approved by the UMPD Chief of Police.
Thank you for all of your support! This is a great cause that is close to our heart and interests.
