Steve and Kathy Roland established the Dan Roland Legacy Scholarship, an endowment at the University of Minnesota, to honor the life of their son Dan, who died tragically and unexpectedly from suicide at the young age of 24. This annual renewable scholarship is funded and will be first awarded in the Fall of 2019. Additional tax-deductible donations are welcome and will directly increase the amount of the scholarship award. We invite you to contribute to Dan's legacy and support bright and talented students who will proudly carry it forward.

Dan resolved from a young age to attend the U of M. He had a strong sense of family and community and was a “Gopher” through and through. His college education was important to him and his family as he was a first generation college graduate. Dan graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism with an emphasis in professional strategic communication from the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota.

Dan was a determined and strong leader who had a passion for people and learning. His bright blue eyes and winning smile immediately lit up every room he entered. When not studying or coordinating a social event, Dan could be found listening to music, playing or watching hockey. His favorite time of his life was his four years at the U of M. As a proud alumni, he would have liked to go to college forever if he could. He dreamed of becoming an adjunct professor, “just for something to do.” Dan was profoundly energetic and professional. Despite his young age, he was considered a mentor to many. Dan worked through college while carrying a full class load. A complete stranger he met through his work was so impressed by him that he became his benefactor and paid for his books all four years of college. This scholarship is intended to pay it forward on behalf of Dan.

The Dan Roland Legacy Scholarship is a four year renewable scholarship award which will be automatically renewed each year provided the scholar meets certain academic requirements. In addition, Dan Roland Legacy Scholars are selected because they have many if not all of the following characteristics that Dan Roland embodied: demonstrated leadership, hard-work, and perseverance; passion for bringing people together; engagement in student and professional activities and/or extracurricular activities. Dan Roland Legacy Scholars are strongly encouraged to remain dedicated to these unique qualities while a student at the University of Minnesota.
